Sangharakshita speaks to a Chairs assembly on the theme of the FWBO (Triratna) Refuge Tree. He begins by explaining the origins of the FWBO Refuge Tree, why it differs from the traditional Tibetan style Refuge Trees and his vision for a Refuge Tree that honours the breadth of the Buddhist tradition. He speaks about the spiritual inspiration that can be derived from the individual figures and illustrates that with reference to a few of the figures including Atīśa, Padmasambhava, Hui-neng, Chi-I and the Buddha.
He shares what of those figures life stories particularly inspired him.
Attention is also drawn to the importance of learning about the Buddha's own life through studying the Pali scriptures and the value of visiting the key holy places associated with the Buddha's life.
He goes on to speak about the Buddhist scriptures that are also found on the Refuge Tree and draws attention to what he describes as an important principle found in the 'Four Reliances'.
